Communication Tools
Communication poses many challenges for people with hearing, vision, or speech loss. Today, a number of digital devices have been developed to solve this problem for people with physical disabilities.
For example, UNI has created a two-way communication tool for the deaf that uses gesture and speech technology. This tool works by deciphering hand and finger gestures with a specialized camera algorithm and then converting them into text in a very short time to translate the sign language.
In addition, the system is equipped with speech recognition software that converts speech into text for two-way communication. UNI also allows you to create your own sign language with its sign builder, so it’s easy to add custom language to dictionaries.
Another system to help deaf people communicate has been developed by Transcence, whose app allows such people to participate in general conversation. The Transcence app picks up what each participant is saying in a conversation, using each participant’s microphone, and then converts it into text in real time and visualizes it on a smartphone. In the app, each participant’s speech in a group conversation is marked with a different color, just like in a normal group chat.
Assist-Mi is an app that helps people with disabilities get help in real time. It is a computer program that can connect caregivers or medics at any time with a disabled person who may need their help. Services include help to do some work or travel, or to buy basic necessities. The app has a feature called Mi-Profile, which provides user needs so the caregiver knows what to do when help is requested. The app also has two-way communication and GPS for better location information.
